Continuity Editing Exercise.

'The Babysitter'.

In my short film i met the criteria of the brief we where given.
A character pens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair oppposite another character, with whom she or he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.
Also we should demonstrate our knowledge and understand of Match On Action, Shot/ Reverse Shot and also the 180 Degree Rule.

In my film, there are two examples of a character opening a door; one when Jenna opens the downstairs door to the flat and also again when I, Myself open the front door to let her in. Although the shot of Jenna opening the door is where we used our Match On Action technique.

A character crossing the room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character is also seen when Jenna walks into the front room and is opposite isabella who is watching the television, and although isabella cannot properly talk, because she is a baby, Jenna tries to interact with her best she can.
Although we do have a small conversation at the front door as Jenna enters and once again the end of the film, Myself and Jenna engage in conversation also going towards the criteria. During this conversation we use Shot / Reverse Shot, changing views depending on who is speaking.

We also obey the 180 Degree Rule throughout the conversation and throughout our film.

The Good Points of our film, in my opinion is, firstly that we did stick to the criteria we was given. Also i think that the fact we used an actual house, instead of the school toilets or somewhere else helped in the success of our film, as we had all our props in place and was easier than having to make do with what we had, which wouldn't of been a lot. We also included another character in our film, who wasn't someone who was part of our media class. Using the baby made it a bit harder for Jenna to do her role as we couldn't not tell Isabella what she was supposed to do so we had to also work around how she was on the day, which was quite challenging. In our film, we also change scenerey and room quite a bit, from outside, to inside the flat, also going up a flight of stairs and then to inside the front room and lastly to the kitchen. I think all these helped to make our film better, which it may not have been if these things weren't available.

Things that Weren't So Good about my work were things like, the sound of wind that can be heard during Jenna's walking up to the flat, although things like this cannot be helped it still affected the end result of our filming. Our camera work, also, wasn't the best of things, for example in shots where the camera is looking at glass you are able to see the reflect of me or me and Jenna, depending on who is doing the filming. Also, the story line of our film may, to some people, be a bit unclear.

I think that maybe we could of made a few Improvements given more time. Things, such as, sound, maybe could of been clearer but this was also due to the equipment we used. Also given more time, we could of may be found a better soundtrack or music to go with our film and the certain shots that are seen. We could of maybe stuck completely to the criteria and had made the story line so that me and Jenna had a conversation opposite each other after she had entered the room.
Also we maybe could played our role a bit better, we could of been more forward and confident whilst filming, though none of us took drama so where not the best actors :)
If we filmed again, we could be more careful in the way we was filming things, we also could of used more types of camera shot.
Next time, I'd take a lot more time to plan out correctly and exactly what we were going to do and how we were going to do it.
